"Bang on drums". Face it, a lot of rock drummers are, well, straight-forward.

Then there are the jazz drummers, Buddy Rich and numerous others.

Terry Bozzio (who is not only a great talent, but a thinker) and similar western kit drummers who push the limits. Neil Peart (Neil Ellwood Peart, OC, is a Canadian musician and author google said…)

More power to him (Bill Bruford).

One could say many academic papers/dissertations are "theoretical".
