Ok, so the lack of production of new music from JA, along with the ongoing shammockery that tours under the name of Yes pretty much exhausted my interest in what had dissolved into an ongoing bad joke. But I remain a little bit fascinated by the business of music, particularly that of live performance. Some acts consistently do quite well, while others...not so much...and, of course, HSW continuing to use the Yes name to ~sell~ concert tickets will sometimes provide a weary chuckle.
If only they'd called themselves HSW of Yes...or Stone Ghost...or The Offenders...or The Pit Bulls...or *anything* but Yes.
(If they'd called themselves The Pit Bulls they could be banned in various parts of the world, making some of the numbers they do kinda *understable*)
Anyway, here's a slice that's mostly about HSW's key market *Florida*.
18 Furthur Hearst Greek Theatre Berkeley, Calif. Sept. 27-29, 2013 $1,328,461 22,229 /
24,999 3 / 1 $65, $59.50
Before heading off to *Florida* I thought the numbers done by comparable acts/brands might be interesting to see.
Further is still doing it right.
21 Black Sabbath, Andrew W.K. Wells Fargo Center Philadelphia, Pa. Aug. 10, 2013 $1,091,335 13,176 /
14,500 1 / 0 $125, $89.50, $49.50, $35
Black Sabbath? Oh nothing...only about a million bucks.
43 Journey Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys Stateline, Nev. Sept. 14, 2013 $528,909 6,429 /
6,429 1 / 1 $199.50, $89.50, $59.50
No doubt this is what HSW hoped to get away with.
63 Mark Knopfler Fox Theater Oakland, Calif. Oct. 27-28, 2013 $362,884 3,684 /
3,838 2 / 1 $125.50, $89.50, $65.50
Boom, Like That.
74 Thievery Corporation, Morcheeba, Afrolicious Hearst Greek Theatre Berkeley, Calif. Sept. 21, 2013 $292,793 5,902 /
6,500 1 / 0 $55, $49.50
I love me some Morcheeba...but I included this listing because of the really cool name of the headliner. If it wasn't already being used, it would have been a perfect name for HSW.
So, off to *Florida*...Ruth Eckard Hall specifically.
83 Bill Cosby Ruth Eckerd Hall Clearwater, Fla. March 23, 2013 $200,898 3,908 /
4,080 2 / 0 $63, $50, $4
Hey, it's *two* nights of good clean comedy and no "N" words.
90 Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons Ruth Eckerd Hall Clearwater, Fla. Feb. 9, 2013 $164,096 2,116 /
2,116 1 / 1 $115, $75, $59.50
The Four Seasons have been heavy in my listening rotation lately...and sure, this is a small room, but they did score a sold out show.
95 Diana Krall Ruth Eckerd Hall Clearwater, Fla. April 3, 2013 $149,580 1,530 /
1,970 1 / 0 $135, $85, $69
You know, I tried to get into Diana Krall...but for whatever reason just never could. But because "I'm not going" doesn't mean an act won't sell well.
96 Earth, Wind and Fire Ruth Eckerd Hall Clearwater, Fla. June 20, 2013 $148,429 1,684 /
1,940 1 / 0 $126, $86, $60, $43
Sing A Song...
124 Yes Ruth Eckerd Hall Clearwater, Fla. April 2, 2013 $96,256 1,543 /
1,990 1 / 0 $125, $69.50, $49.50
While I have seen a gross from this version of SHWes somewhat higher than this one, most of what I've seen start with the number 6 or lower. So on measure, this is that band kicking concert gross ass...or kicking ass for them anyway.
So bravo SHWes, killin' it close to the Cruise Lines without even gettin' on a boat. Next stop sharin' the stage with some real Yes members getting inducted into some sort of HoF?
