'Yes' attempting to sound Yes-like...I believe that's the definition of self-parody.

"IWAWK" could also stand for "It Was Awful, We Know".

It was all we knew, to expect more of the band than this.

The main guitar riff kinda reminds me of a geriatric "When The Heart Rules The Mind."

First time I heard it as soon Howe started playing I immediately thought of "My Grandfather's Clock", still do actually, but I think it's a good summery sort of song, it's one of my faves from the album. Sure, it isn't Sound Chaser, but what is, other than....well, *Sound Chaser*

It's definitely stuck in my head but some of the lyrics are just so limp and forced (the "that is by no means favor or coincidence" is so weird in that it ended up as the final lines; reminds me of Howe's description of how he would bring very straight forward lyrics to Anderson in the early days and JA would be able to turn them into something a little more poetic).

The other thing I notice about this song is that I'm not quite convinced it's Squire on bass. I had that feeling about "Hour of Need" from _Fly From Here_ too. Since those two songs sound SO similar to something you'd hear on one of Howe's solo albums, I wondered if it was him on bass--perhaps having used his tracks he did at home. I don't know, to me the playing and sound of the bass on "IWAWK" doesn't sound like Squire and doesn't sound like the bass sound on the rest of the tracks.

Hmmm, it could be, it's not without precedent, didn't Howe also play bass on "Be The One", aka "The Worstest Yes Song Of All Time"?

Yes, six string bass on "Be The One" and Squire was playing a piccolo bass on that one (thanks Wikipedia).

I do like the "Humankind" section of "Be The One" a lot...

Funny, I was thinking how much almost everything on the new release sounds like "Be The One"....although I think I like the faster section of BTO (is that "Humankind"? Is that Bachman-Turner?) better than anything I've heard on H&E after a few listens. There were at least some parts of Fly From Here that I really liked--I just can't seem to find much of interest in H&E so far.

"The Game" is my favorite so far. I do like the album overall.

It is tasteful in its own, deceptively subtle way.

I do have to hand it to Davison for traveling around to the band members. I've only had two brief in-person encounters--he seems to be one of the most humble musicians I've met.

"In a World of our Own" is my least favorite. OK, there is a stench to it. Sounds too much like Anderson trying to be reggae on that "Ladder" song, or with one of his many pick up bands.

Does that mean it IS subtle, or it isn't?

Paul

It's up there, but there is some dreck on OYE that is worst.
