Discussion:
No Heaven and Earth songs on summer tour?

One description read along the lines of "albums in their entirety" (Fragile and CTTE?!), 'greatest hits' and 'material from new recording.'

However, Howe and maybe others downplayed or said that any new material performance was unlikely.

Not to be a downer, but, like the great complainer, I see no reason to include a Yes concert in any summer entertainment plans......

That's still the current description at Yesworld.

I'm looking at interviews with Squire and Davison from early April or
late March... Still talking about playing new material in concert for
this summer:

Squire (4/10 TechnologyTell): "That's really my main focus, to be
able to do as much of Heaven and Earth as possible on the tour. And
we're all looking towards that as a goal, I think."

Squire (4/2 Billboard): "As much as possible is all I can say now.
Honestly, I'm really more interested in playing the new material, and
that's really always been Yes' way of working."

Davison (4/1 ProgReport): "And we'll also be doing sort of a mixture of
various songs including a couple of new songs as well."

Just curious, do you have a link to a more recent 'Howe and maybe
others' interview suggesting that plans have changed?

It was the "talk" appearance of the band on Cruise to the Edge.

They weren't being this positive at all. Steve in fact said he doubted it. Although, he is very happy with the recording and how well it came together despite earlier hesitations about a new recording.

Thanks for this info, Bill. It seems like they're not all "on the same
page" as to their plans for the new material. (Downes says they're
working on three, Davison says a couple, Squire says as many as
possible. White seems wise not to voice an opinion at all!)

My reaction to most bands playing their "new material" is generally
"Awww fuck no!" and this is my opinion here. Yes, the acts want to
flog as many copies of their latest mediocre effort as possible, but
they never seem to learn how to cherry pick the better tracks. At the
end of the day, most of the audience want something akin to 60%
greatest hits, 30% album tracks and only 10% new material.

If I were to go, it would be in the hopes of seeing new material more than anything else. I remember being very excited at seeing/hearing the "new" GFTO material back in the day. On the Drama tour, I enjoyed the Drama material the most. It was fresh and I was not comparing the Buggles men to their predecessors on those tunes. Even the Talk tour I enjoyed very much because they played a lot of new music on that tour. In the case of OYE, however, I was more interested in older material since I did not enjoy OYE so much. So I suppose it comes down to what the new material sounds like. I think the whole album thing is nice for 2 tours but I would rather they mix it up a bit.

I don't know if it's a US thing as well or not, but there's a definite
recent theme in the UK for long dead bands being resurrected to tour
their "greatest" album.

As for Drama and GFTO I love 'em, but that's back when there was some
originality in the creation process, something I've found to be
increasingly lacking post-Union. From then on, the percentage of
tracks I can be bothered with has declined each time, although I did
think that Fly from Here made a brave effort. My general opinion is
that for every two albums released they should have thrown away 50% of
each and made one good album.

Is the new recording available? Anyone heard it yet? I fear more Buggles retreads and bland 80's prog-pop material with the obligatory Howe solo track being the highlight. Maybe Davison has some writing chops, but I'm doubtful.

Howe seems to get his way...I'd go with what he says.

Reading Squire's quotes below, it sounds aspirational not a commitment. I'm guessing one track, a short one, so people can't run to the bathroom and miss it. ;-)
