The Errant Moog?

On the leaked version of H&E, at 4:31 in "Believe Again" there seems to be a mixing error -- assuming that the leaked album is the final mix and mastered version, of course. OTOH, if it's not a mix error, then it's a bizarre choice by Downes.

It's near the end of Howe's ascending solo. Suddenly, a strange Minimoog-style solo synth note appears. A solo using this patch commences at 4:37, but this note seems strangely out-of-place, almost as if the fader was up on that instrument's track during mixing when it should have been down for a few more seconds.

It's as if Downes was in the studio recording his bits, hit a note to make sure that the patch was correct and ready to go just before his section, and no one caught it and mixed it out during final mixing.

Whatever the case, it doesn't sound "right" to me and has caught my ear since the first time I heard the song.

I think it's a combination of RTB not noticing (or caring) and Billy
thinking it sounded "coool".

The mix was clearly a rush job by Sherwood, so it may well be, although it doesn't sound "off" to me. What does are a few spots--right when the drums come in at the beginning Howe is continuing with his opening motif, although at reduced volume, then the fader is pulled down, partway through & we don't hear it again until the end of the song, this would appear to be a mix error because one would think he'd at least finish the lick. Squires backing vocal in the first chorus is way up front in the mix, second chorus it's half the volume, if even that, & third chorus it's somewhere in between. For my tastes the drums are undermixed for most of the album, especially the kick drum, which has the unfortunate effect of robbing much of the "punch" between bass and drums. In spite of all that though it's still an album I'm very fond of, the only song that I can say I'm not at all that enamored with is "In A World of Our Own", backing vocals & harmonies are terrific, almost Brian Wilson-esque, but the style & the lyrics don't suit Davison's voice to my ears.

BTW reviews of the first 2 shows have people pleasantly surprised by Downes' rendition of Cans & Brahms.

Wow! That's great! I seriously wondered if they would do it.

Yes, to be a fly on the wall as to what really happened on the mixing, etc.

H&E is yet another Yes incarnation. Living Tree show (Awaken, particularly) was great live, but honestly, the sappy Anderson stuff lost me years--no, decades--ago.

I'm not so sure it is an errant note. It could be a "beat", a hint of sound that is to come.

I feel that it is fine where it is. (Unless it IS a mixing f+u)

I've used one note "hits" in my music that are the only time in the song that particular sound is used. This isn't that uncommon in the overall scheme of things.
