Hi all, thought this should be represented here.

http://stevenwilsonhq.com/sw/yes-relayer-steven-wilson-remix/

Quite surprised that this would be the next one. I, perhaps like many others, figured GFtO would be next. Nontheless, I can't bloody wait.

By the by, others have said that they don't think Tormato will get Wilsonned. I'm pretty sure it will - it'd be a glaring omission, especially as no other album needs it more! Here's hoping for 'Drama' also.

It's going to take some convincing to get Howe to agree to Tormato, he's on record as saying he doubts anything good could come from it, remaster-wise.

Haven't got the Wilson treatment for TYA and CttE, but want to. Opinions from the group?

I have both, the sonic differences are at times subtle & other times profound, Siberian Khatru imo is the song most improved, but unfortunately CttE (the song) is all but ruined for me because of what I believe is a poor decision by Wilson to reinstate a part obviously recorded but excised (wisely) by Offord in the original mix. It's during the "in her white lace" sequence, a bit difficult to explain if you haven't heard it, but I'll try: It's clear from the remix that originally, just to use an example-- the line "in charge of who is there, in charge of me", had Chris & Steve singing "in her white lace", at the same time as Jon singing his line. A prudent decision by I'm guessing Eddie removed that Chris & Steve bit & they don't come in until ".....she could clearly see the lady sadly looking". On the remix, Wilson has restored that edited-out bit (and others in that section too), so now we have Jon singing "in charge of....etc" *at the same time* as Chris & Steve (singing "in her white lace"...) and it sounds awful to me, it just clashes and sounds like mud, the song as it was is as near to perfection as one could ever hope for, make it crisper, make it sound better, sure, I'm totally for that, but don't change the _dynamic_ of the song by restoring substantial parts of the song that were never there in all versions of the song previously released. So that version just doesn't work for me at all. Ymmv obviously, and you may prefer it, but I don't at all & revert to earlier mixes for the song CttE.
Very much looking forward to Relayer though.

Yeah, he's also reinstated the line 'Thru the duty' which wasn't there at all in the original mix, but was - mysteriously - on the lyric sheet. I thought that was odd, as SW is usually meticulous about being faithful to the original. Personally though, as the seperation is such that the two sets of lyrics don't clash, I quite like having that back in the mix.

I don't have TYA yet, but have read many opinions saying that it's 'better' than CttE. Any thoughts on this?

Being such as Relayer nut, this re-mix thing interests me.

Then again, I've got a small stack of "interesting things" to go through.

Hi everyone, new here.

Question on this new treatment, I think that I had read many moons ago that the original, non-remastered version of 'The Gates of Delirium' had a long organ intro fading in. I recall someone being irritated at its absence. Can anyone confirm?

Tracklist for this now available:

http://yesworld.com/2014/08/relayer-5-1-hi-res-stereo-remixed-expanded-steven-wilson-2014/

Question: what's the 'archive master' version? There's already the needle-drop and flat transfer, so what could this be? Also, Gates has it's 'studio run-through' in Additional Material as well as Alternate Album - are these the same version...?

Anyway, as well as the new mixes, there's some interesting-looking stuff not heard before in terms of studio run-throughs and a 'demo' version of Soundchaser, not to mention a nice '76 live version of SC. Smashing.

I've been content with the original recording for 20 years. Think I can live the rest of my life with just that one.

But the original recording is 40 years old... Are you content with it
for just the first 20, the last 20, or certain years in between?? :-)

While I'm not happy with what Wilson did with the song CttE, the difference with the other 2 songs is so dramatic that it made the purchase well worth it. The production on Relayer was always somewhat spotty, so I'm expecting even better things from the remaster.

Yup. First heard it in the early 90s when I became a fan.

My copy of Wilson's remixed "Relayer" CD/DVD arrived today from the UK. Steven Wilson's Headphone Dust shipped it out on Monday, in my mailbox today. Impressive shipping speed.

Gonna listen to it this afternoon.

I'm very happy with this. Like the previous two Wilson stereo remixes, everything is cleaner and more defined. Instruments pop in a big way and you hear things previously lost in the soup.

And, like the other remixes, there are elements that were previously mixed out that are now present. Initially jarring as these are, I found myself getting used to them with CTTE and expect to do the same with Relayer.

Unless I'm misremembering, there are two short transitional sections of Gates that were, apparently, edited which are now restored. The track runs 21:58 as presented here as opposed to the 21:50 we're used to. I'll have to do a side-by-side waveform comparison to be certain of this. I may be wrong here and it may simply be a case of the new mix sounding different in these sections and I'm parsing them wrong.

Anyway . . . totally worth it :-)

Good to hear. Question on this, I seem to recall hearing that the original mix of 'Gates' had an organ intro fading in to the beginning of the song, and that that intro was significantly shortened on the Atlantic CD remasters. Do you know what I'm talking about? I was wondering (if it is indeed this song) if that intro was restored.

There's no organ intro here.
