Yes fans have been well served with the bands DVD releases, though not all
have stood the test of time. I give the highest honors to Symphonic Yes with
House of Blues just behind. Can't go wrong with either of these. I have high
hopes that Tsongas will go to the top of the heap.

Symphonic...let's hope for more live material on DVD. Tsongas looks
good from the part that shown on PBS.

Actually, no ...it was from the tail end of the tour, and within a
year the band had broken up. The picture is grainy, the sound is mono,
and the performance is flat. By leaps and bounds, that is the *worst*
Yes DVD to date.

My box says it is 5.1 Dolby digital surround, and the shows from 79 were
better than those from 78. That band split up a year later is hardly
relevant! The Tormato tour is many people's favourite era. My only
complaint is that the set is so short on this dvd - no Awaken or HotS..

If you honestly think the Philly 79 DVD is the "Best Yes DVD", then you're
an idiot, simple as that.

It's *by far* the _worst_.

The box lies. As someone who has heard about 25 boots from the Tormato
tour, the 78 shows were played with far more energy and intensity. The
version of Khatru on that Philly CD is played slower than the version
on the OYE tour. The picture is grainy, the sound is flat, the
performance is weak, and I'm starting to think you are simply a troll.

LOL, so I'm a troll just because I think the 79 shows were better?! I
invite to check out Arriving UFO (Miami 79) and Circus of Heaven 79, both
awesome shows. I admit that I haven't heard as many Tourmato boots as you,
but the ones from 78 that I have heard eg Wembley lack that special groove
that I feel the later ones have, IMHO only. HoTS in particular improved
rhythmically as the tour went on I feel.
Oh, and how many trolls do you know who have been into Yes for 20 years?
Still if you want to act like an arrogant elitist who has exclusive rights
to the "truth" be my guest. I see 1 other poster already, who agrees with
me about this dvd. A spectrum of opinion is surely healthy after all?

The troll comment is because I still find it hard to believe that
anyone would rate this DVD as the best. combined with the fact that I
haven't seen any posts from you here before, it seemed like an obvious
troll post.

And if you want to hear high energy, intense performances from the
Tormato tour, seek out some of the earliest shows. Boston 8/30&31/78,
Providence 9/1, Springfield 9/2, New Haven 9/3&4, New York 9/7 to name
a few. If I listen to one of those, followed by a '79, or late '79
show, there is no comparison.

Thanks, I will check them out when I can *afford* to ;-)
I just prefered the later shows based on the few boots from 78 I had
heard... Arriving Ufo from Miami June 79 is the best show I have heard from
this tour.

No, you're claiming the 79 Philly *DVD* is the *best*, as per the title of
the thread. Whether or not you feel the 79 _shows_ were better is
irrelevant, we're discussing the DVDs here. The Philly 79 DVD is abysmal at
best, it's nowhere near a complete show and not particularly representative
of the better moments of that tour, the picture is dark & grainy, the
editing sterile & uninspired, the sound is so poor that the producers of
Yesyears chose to replace the audio of the clip of Siberian Khatru from that
Philly 79 show with the audio from (IIRC) Yessongs. It's mono & muffled
throughout, the source 1979 videotape, not some seperate multitrack. I'll
grant you Howe plays better than on later DVDs, but it's a struggle to
actually hear what he's playing through the layers of gauze. The *technical*
flaws alone of the Philly 79 DVD would be enough to drop it considerably
down any "best of" list. If people buy into your "this is the Best Yes DVD"
and go out & buy the thing, they're bound to be sorely disappointed, to say
the least.
I'm with Matt in this one.

Hi Paul

I accept the bulk of your criticisms about the quality. I didn't know it
was mono as my system isn't so hi tech that I could tell! I thought the
picture was ok on my pc monitor. The main reason I chose this as my
favourite is because, despite the poor set list, it captures the classic
line up in their heyday. I personally rate their playing back then above
what it's like now, even if this wasn't the best show on the tour. Plus the
dvd is cheap on the net!

My *actual* favourite Yes dvd is QPR 1975, but that's not "officially"
available ;-) Philly is the only "early" performance I know of that is
legally available.

Depends I guess on how one defines "officially", since Yesworld list quite a
few of these 'unofficial' videos/DVDs, which gives them a certain
legitimacy--
http://yesworld.com/galdisvid.html
Earlier performances of course are Musicladen (way too short) & Yessongs.
Now *there's* a DVD that cries out for digital remastering!

QPR is legally available in Asia, and what about Yessongs?!? That is available
everywhere!

I agree Live in Philadelphia is the best performance (Steve Howe in
particular was much more powerful than on Symphonic or HOB), but the
poor sound and picture quality makes Live in Philadelphia a less
satisfying DVD than those other two.

That said, the Philadelphia DVD will take you back to the golden age
when Steve Howe was the Yes guitarist known as "old leatherpants".

I don't count bootlegs so my choices would be in this order

1) House of Blues
2) Symphonic Yes
3) Yessongs (Imperfect, but enjoyable and historically significant.)
4) Keys To Ascension (Imperfect, but enjoyable)

I could go either way with 1 and 2. I like House of Blues because it rocks
more. Symphonic has the best version of "And You And I" ever.

I also like the 90125 Live concert video which is not out on DVD yet. I
copied my VHS version to DVD. I'd rate it #3 when it comes out.

House of Blues for me, no question.
Clear production, intimate setting, great setlist and promoting one of Yes'
greatest albums

Tales From Topographic Oceans Tour B?W Super 16mm neg/dupe (upscaled to UHD 4K). Lovely video quality, and listenable sound (mono)
Missing the latter half of Side 3, but otherwise, this is by far the best footage you'll ever see of the classic lineup (if you like TFTO, that is).
