Rob "all y'all have always been more popular than Yes" Allen
Alan Parsons Project, Moody Blues, Roger Hodgson all grossing more than Yes. It is what it is at this point -- I suppose success for Yes at this point as a touring band is anything above an attendance of 1000.

If you get the chance to see Hodgson, grab it. He's *fantastic* in concert, solo (actually duo, him & a horn player) or with full band. His voice is almost completely untouched by the passing of time, truly amazing, nails high notes Anderson would have trouble reaching, and to think, Yes have asked him to join at least twice, and he's politely declined. Ah, the possibilities......

You are right, Hodgson's voice seems to have held up very well. He's also a good player and can carry a solo show pretty well on the keyboards and guitar. He has had great reviews touring with full band recently, and has also done some shows with just one additional player, but that guy plays about 10 instruments and sings very well, so between the two of them they are able to produce a remarkably full sound. I think if JA could track down this same guy who plays with Hodgson, it would make for a much better show if JA brought this fellow along:

I've seen him with both full-band and the "one other guy", and what impresses me most is Hodgsons songs are so strong that they hold up equally well in either format, I didn't miss the full band at all in just the duo format. I understand his voice and songwriting have a "love it or hate it" type of appeal, much like Anderson. Where Hodgson & Anderson differ however is in their instrumental prowess, RH is capable of playing far more complex instrumentation than the near instrumentally inept JA, something which severely limits what JA can do in concert, and I really wish he'd realize and, as you say, team up with an accomplished player. Or even a *band*, for a change. But I suppose that would mean sharing the profits. :/

Well, JA did team up with an accomplished player when he toured with
Wakeman. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be a regular thing. Too bad,
I'd buy a ticket for that combination again any time.

It was some time ago that "success" for SHWes was defined by their ability to "still get bookings". Certainly using the Yes name pretty much guarantees that "success"...but as it's going now, they do seem to be doing better than tours past...there had been lots of shows where they didn't draw 1000 people, along with those shows with Frampton, Styx, PH where they grossed less that 70k.

I count having a better tribute singer and the more "classic" setlist as reasons for the improvement.
