Yeah, I assumed the garb was from a military surplus store. Those
jackets are still big among hipsters.
John & Yoko went from peaceniks to radicals awfully quickly. It
wasn't the best phase of his music.
You can get the Dick Cavett interview with John Lennon (as well as
George) on DVD, where he talks about this.
I'm always put off by the vibe from Lennon in the early 70s.
There's even a sense from Lennon that he perceives that people don't
really appreciate the Beatles.
Lennon was an asshole most of his life but especially during this part.
Once the people he was trying to help told him to fuck off and the
public stopped buying his shitty records, he stopped playing radical.
That's all he did throughout his life, play roles. One thing remained
constant, he was an asshole.

I've never heard of this before. Supposedly this is true. All this time, I figured he got the jacket at a thrift store which a lot of people in America did at the time. I'm trying to figure out what trip this was for John that he would be in Germany. Unless it was after, he and Yoko got married and they were flying back to the UK.

He shouldn't be wearing that. He never served.
Especially with E-5 Sergeant stripes which I myself earned during my service as a 2 year infantry draftee.
Like it's been pointed out here already, most freaks wore them because it was the 'hip' thing to do. But Lennon... he was smarter than your average bear. I think he wore them as a slap in the face to the US war machine in general, and the American solder in particular. He never missed a step, let me tell you.....
They should have tossed his ass out of the country. Problem was even the
Brits didn't want the shithead back. Even his wacky wife threw him out
and told him to grow up.

Musically and thematically, that phase of Lennon's career was a big misstep, in my opinion. Tony King would later urge Lennon to renounce the angry militant persona in interviews. And Lennon himself eventually admitted that the radical phase had nearly ruined his career.
Not only were the themes he was writing about rejected by the sane
people of the world, the music was terrible as well as the musicianship.
Even his wife was disgusted with him and threw him out of the house.
The military garb was used by a lot of militant froups at that time to signify their militancy. Some of these people had dabbled in Lenin, and they supposed they were members of the "revolutionary vanguard." In the STINYC phase, Lennon did seem to embrace this stuff to an extent. The question is, was this just another fad for them to latch onto -- or were they expressing genuine commitment? They didn't stay with it for long.
People were sickened by that lot of filthy hippies. They were
discredited fairly quickly when McGovern lost 49 states. They thought
they were making a comeback with Carter but his incompetence just
confirmed that the left are mentally disturbed and swept him from office
after one term. That paved the way for Reagan and Morning in America.

The left wing assholes of today are watching Trump totally discredit
their movement today.
